Well, we are not only in the Army now, we are in the Cav (short for Cavalry). Since I had NO idea what the Cav meant other than that they use to ride horses, now they ride helicopters, I chose to do some research to understand some of the lingo that I've heard thrown around this week. I went to an FRG (Family Readiness Group) meeting for spouses and to a troop cook out for the HHT (Headquarters and Headquarters Troop) which Jim is stationed with. Here is what I have deciphered so far:
*The 1st Cavalry Division in Ft. Hood Texas is the only one with a ceremonial horse cavalry.
* During the Vietnam War they made the distinction between the Air Cavalry and the Armored Cavalry. Jim is in the Air Cavalry with the 2-17th Cavalry Regiment. The way it goes is 2-17th Cavalry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell.
*The 2-17th's motto is "Out Front"
* Cavalry Structure vs. Infantry Structure
Regiment - Battalion
Squadron - Brigade
Troop-Unit
*And one of the big things- Jim gets to wear a Stetson and earn his spurs once he goes on a "spur ride" (a little Army hazing)We are excited to be part of ministering to those in the Air Cav! :)
