Updates from Jim

So this is more of a picture update, but it is an update all the same! :)  Jim is really enjoying the ministry that he has been part of and has been encouraged by the response of the soldiers he interacts with.  We really feel blessed by the enjoyment that the Lord has given him in his ministry!

Goodie Bags

Margo and I helped pack up goodie bags for the single soldier barracks for returning soldiers!  We had fun hanging out with friends and getting in the spirit of soldiers homecoming! :)

Another Day at Monkeynastics!

Southern Girl

So, like any good South Carolina girl I like a good glass of sweet tea!  Although we still technically live in the south, the sweet tea just isn't the same and I've tried a few recipes and finally found a very sweet, very southern sweet tea recipe!!!  So, go to this food network link to get the receipe or look below.  (My two disclaimers- 1) I use four tea bags instead of loose tea, 2) I use about half of the simple syrup in one batch!)

Ingredients

  • 1-ounce loose black tea
  • 1 quart hot water
  • 1 quart room temperature water

Simple Syrup:

  • 5 cups sugar
  • 3 cups cold water

Directions

Infuse loose tea into hot water for 4 to 5 minutes. Strain tea into room temperature water. Sweeten with simple syrup if desired.
For simple syrup, in a small non-reactive pot combine 5 cups of sugar and 3 cups of cold water. Slowly bring to a boil and add 6 sliced lemons and a few sprigs of fresh mint. Remove from heat. Allow to cool 10 minutes and strain.

Vices and Virtues

So we took an hour car ride to find Dunkin' Donuts coconut donuts but we did work out together this evening!  Maybe I will instill some type of positive traits in this little girl! ;)

Margo with her "munchkin" donuts holes!  Her favorite are chocolate and powdered sugar - a girl after my own heart! :)

Working out to a "Denise Austin" tape I have had since high school. When it was over Margo asked if we could do it again... I said no! ;)

Chair aerobics later at night! :)

My little ballerina!

Love hearing her singing out complete with hand motions!

And of course twirling around!

Home Decor

I have had a pile of pictures, frames, and random wall ornaments in the spare bedroom just waiting to be tackled but couldn't figure out what to do with all the random pieces I had - then I decided to do groupings of picures but again have been hesitant about how to do them.  But this past week I went into full "nesting" mode in preparing for Jim's return home (I know it's not for a few more months, but it's nice to get things prepared and keep my hopes up!)  So here's how they turned out...

Retreat at Ft. Campbell

One neat thing about living on an Army post is that you hear a canon and trumpet played to tell the time instead of church bells.  The flag goes up for the day at Reveille and comes down at Retreat.  It is held at the division headquarters here at Ft. Campbell which is right near the PX and Commissary so we hear it every once in a while if we come at the right time of day.  Once you hear the trumpet sound you stop, stand toward the flag, and wait until the bugle call is over before resuming what you were doing.  Cars pull to the side, soldiers stand at attention saluting the flag, and civilians stand with their hand over their heart.  Margo and I watched (her from the inside of the warm car since it was below 30 degrees and she doesn't like the canon blast!) and I have to say that I had tears in my eyes when I saw the soldiers take down this massive flag today.  When lowering it they ran to catch the sides so that they didn't touch the ground - such respect and honor was shown today and I am glad I got to watch on this historic MLK holiday.  I am so proud of this flag.  For the nation and the people that she represents.
The flag is lowered at 1700 (5:00pm)

The soldiers who are charged with lowering the flag.

The canon (with blanks in it of course) is fired after the first sound of retreat and then the bugle calls.

Lowering the flag.

Again, catching and lowering the flag.
